Long Lost Family tv programme on lost identities 14.8.2023

Post by Thunder »

I think we have all heard of the terrible treatment that went on in Ireland in the homes run by nuns until quite recently (the 1970s) and they way they treated unmarried mothers, Apparently there are about 30,000 birth entries which have the false names entered even though it had been illegal to put false information on births since 1874. It appears that the birth records contain scant information, no doubt to hide the information. Well worth a look at the programme.

Do we know if the same was for the homes in England and Wales. I recall a Guardian Article from 6 years ago which reported;
The head of the Catholic church in England and Wales has apologised for its part in the” hurt” caused to young unmarried women who say they were felt pressured into handing over their babies for adoption in the 1950s, 60s and 70s.
A subsequent thought process wonders whether the nuns were instructed to blatantly lie and turn away enquirers, or they did so in defence of their predecessors/superiors.
