You learn something everyday!, according to an article in the Daily Mirror the mother of the first baby born under the NHS did not have to pay the midwife one Shilling and Sixpence as she held on until 5 July 1948 to give birth.

Incidentally The National Archives have a number of articles about the NHS, in my view it doesn't cover the debts of the Voluntary-funded Hospitals which were incorporated into the NHS nor the introduction of prescription charges in 1951 which led to the Health Minister resigning.
