Mary Gertrude Burtenshaw

Post by Thunder »

I came across her Second World War service file at TNA and it is in my view strange, according to TNA's catalogue the file is WO 423/11928: [1939-1963]: Name: M G Burtenshaw. Service number: W/29755. Date of birth: 29 May 1905. The file says that her name was Miss Mary Gertrude Burtenshaw, born on 29 May 1905 in Upton Park, London (part of east London) but there is no trace of her on ancestry. She was living at 65 Wellesley Road, Ilford, Essex, she joined the ATS on 9 January 1940 and discharged on 14 November 1950. I suppose she could have been married and then divorced and reverted to becoming a spinster again.

May’s family is on ancestry. She died a spinster in 1973, weston super mare.

There are other records for her (under her birth name May). 1911 census: She's with her parents Henry & Elizabeth (and siblings) in West Ham.
She travelled to the USA in 1939. Occupation: Typist. She was visiting an uncle in Canada.

Did May have any connection to the Ilford Ladies' Athletic Club? There's a July 1932 marriage notice for a May Burtenshaw and Frederick Fullalove of West Ham. The bride was the secretary for the ILAC at the time.
