Catholic baptism

Post by Sheila »

Can anyone read and translate the note in Latin added at the bottom of this Catholic baptism record?
I can read the name George Archibald, Edinburgh and the date 25/8/50 but unable to make out the rest.

The marginal notes could refer to the subsequent marriage details of the child baptised. I see the Latin word "matrimonium" (translation: marriage, wedlock, matrimony). As such, George Archibald (born Edinburgh 25/8/1850) could be the husband of Nora Maud Healy.

Question: Was this an adult baptism?

Thank you, yes it does look like the Latin word 'matrimonium'.

George Archibald married Nora in Scotland 1928. He was born in 1902 in Scotland.

Nora herself was born in 1881 in Devon so she was baptised as an infant.

I wondered if the note added to the baptism could possibly be referring to a divorce between Nora and George, possibly occurring in 1950? But would such a note be added to a baptism record?

Apologies - I thought the date referred to 1850, rather than 1950. Gosh, he was a bit younger than her, wasn't he? :o

Catholic baptism records often contained marginal notes re subsequent marriage details. I don't know about divorce notes, though. I thought Catholics weren't supposed to divorce? In any case, I'm not seeing the Latin term "divortium" (to part, separate) in those notes.

Did George Archibald pass away in 1950?

Thank you, that is very helpful information.

George died in 1983 in Scotland. Nora died in 1964 in Scotland.

Is there any chance you can post a larger, more readable image of those marginal notes? I'm struggling to see some of the other Latin words.

On a separate note, did you ever hear back from the Anglo-Burmese Library regarding your Fraser chap?

ADDED - Could the note indicate that George Alexander's father was Patricius (Patrick) born in 1850 in Edinburgh? I think the "S" before that name may mean "son of" ? :?

Thank you, but I'm afraid George's father's name was Duncan!

I am struggling to make the image larger. I will keep trying.

Regarding The Anglo-Burmese Library - I had no reply about my Fraser chap but thank you for asking!

The baptism image for Nora Maud Healy in 1881 is on FMP if that is any help.
