Joseph Victor LePere past 1871

Post by Eleanorsamwell »

I am trying to find where Joseph Victor LePere was after 1871. He was born 2nd September 1867 to John Creed LePere and Elizabeth LePere (nee Astins) in Parish of St James in Middlesex London

In 1871 living at 19 Cock Lane in St. Sepulchre London with father and mother and siblings - William, Grace and Josephine. They have been wrongly transcribed as Lipere.

I cannot find Joseph anywhere after 1871. I have searched the death records for GRO for a Joseph LePere and all common variations until 1971 and have found nothing which I think fits.

I also cannot find him in any further census. By 1881 Grace and Josephine have died. John and Elizabeth are living with just William at 2 Brooks Market, st Andrew, Finsbury

Any help to find more out about Joseph would be greatly appreciated.

Is this Joseph in 1872? The School record below indicates this Joseph had no parents. It also includes two William Lapere's on the same page, both young,

London, England, Poor Law School District Registers, 1852-1918

Another workhouse record. Image indicates "sent to Hanwell School". (This is after his brief stint on the TS Exmouth).
I believe "Hanwell School" was Central London District School at Hanwell, nicknamed Cuckoo Schools since it was built on Cuckoo Hill. The school housed the parish’s orphans and so-called destitute children.

Name: Joseph Lapere
Admission Age: 10
Record Type: Admission and Discharge
Birth Date: abt 1869
Admission Date: 28 Jul 1879
Admission Place: City of London, City of London, London, England
Discharge Date: 29 Jul 1879

He's been discharged to the TS Exmouth -- a training ship for boys in the Poor Law Union. Ancestry have mis-transcribed the surname. He only lasted 9 days on the TS Exmouth. He was discharged being "unfit for sea service". The notes say "To Union".

London, England, TS Exmouth Training Ship Records, 1876-1918
Name: Joseph Sapere
Age: 11
Birth Date: abt 1868
Residence Year: 1879
Residence Place: City of London
Entrance Date: 9 Jul 1879
Entrance Place: Grays, Essex, England

Apologies if you're already aware of this record:

Web: London, England, Proceedings of the Old Bailey and Ordinary's Accounts Index, 1674-1913
Name: Elizabeth Lepere
Court Date: 16 Sep 1878
Court Place: London, England
Role: witness
Reference Number: t18780916-830
URL: http://www.oldbaileyonline.org/browse.j ... 780916-830

Also, poor Elizabeth was in a spot of bother in 1855...

Name: Elizabeth Eldred Astins
Court Date: 9 Apr 1855
Court Place: London, England
Role: witness
Reference Number: t18550409-481
URL: http://www.oldbaileyonline.org/browse.j ... 550409-481

And it appears husband John Creed Lepere was imprisoned iin 1865 for larceny and receiving.

Thank you very much. I did see the poor records but thought it could not be the same Joseph as the parents said “none” and at that time they were living with their son William LePere and did not die until later.
Yes thank you I did see the criminal records. In relation to William LePere and the larceny - do you know where I can find out more information in relation to this? I have looked for newspaper articles but could not see it.

If the Joseph Lapere, who entered Hanwell School in summer 1879, is your chap you'll need to ascertain what happened to him there. See if you can locate a discharge record for him there (if it exists). Apparently quite a few children who went into Hanwell School at the time prove very difficult to trace afterwards.

UPDATE - Found him in 1881:

1881 England Census
Name: Joseph Lupere
Age: 11
Relationship to Head: Inmate
Where born: London City of, London, Middlesex, England
Civil Parish: Hanwell
Street Address: "Central London Dist School"
Occupation: Scholar
Registration District: Brentford

Two entries on the same page for Joseph Lapere to the Central London School District in this City of London Board of Guardians Register.
The first one shows that he was discharged to the TS Exmouth on 9 July 1879 as posted by Mo.
Second one, the readmission on 24 July 1879, says that he was discharged 19 April 84. Joined 82nd Regiment.
Names parents John and Elizabeth, with addresses.

You mean John Creed LePere's 1865 larceny charge? FMP have a record + image for him in the England & Wales, Crime, Prisons & Punishment, 1770-1935 collection. Sorry, I'm unable to view the image.
Oddly enough, though, FMP indicate I viewed this record before! Probably true - so has this LePere larceny query been raised before? It does have a feel of déjà vu. :?

Maybe I searched for someone else who appears on the same 1865 Crimes & Punishment record image John Creed appears on. And that explains why FMP is showing the record as previously viewed on my account. Still, an odd coincidence.
