I thought people may find the above helpful. Whilst some of it pertains to Dorchester and Fordington in Dorset only, some of it applies in general.

eg you may come across a person whose name is written in the manner Peter Jones alias Smith. Often people make the mistake of thinking this relates to an illegitimate birth, but this is not the case. I will leave you to read the Glossary for the true meaming rather than repeat it all here.

Thanks for the link to the meaning of 'alias'. The information supports something I read long ago that the hyphen had replaced the word 'alias' to create a double-barrelled name in various circumstances.
