The recent release (ongoing) on Scotland's People website of prisoners at Perth Prison is interesting in my view. The prison included the Royal Asylum and at the end of the 1950s the prisoners held there were swopped and sent to Carstairs State Mental Institution (now known as the Carstairs Hospital) in south Scotland in place of the people who had been just suffering from mental illness that was not classified as lunatics and had been in Carstairs. The people would also be catalogued on the National Records of Scotland website before they were sent to the prison.
