Have now seen the newspaper reports.As you say it's a bit gruesome.Has left me wondering if they were
able to get him out of the pit.A block weighing five tons would take some shifting.

No, I haven't seen the newspaper entries.Something for me to look into.I had a look at deaths on cmhrc.co.uk that was in the
magazine but nothing on him.

Mining death

My GGGrandad Robert Callan was a limestone miner in Lesmahagow,Lanark. His death certificate in August 1877 says the cause of death was"fall of block from roof of pit,death instantaneous". He was 45 years old. I have checked various sights but can't find any record of it.Were not all death...

i know.a problem with common names.Mind you not as bad as my husbands.I volunteered to help him with his.His surname of
Smith doesn't help.His father was John Smith(Doh!)Then his mum was a Smith before she married!!!!
