We welcome any query on Who When Where. If you have previously posted it on another forum (including the old WDYTYA forum), please state this in your opening post - this will save people redoing the research which has been done before: they can look at it and possibly go further with it.

Re: Advice please - which Ann Shaw?
Thank you for your replies, and opinions. I'm also coming to the same conclusion, that birthplace, and lack of father details, trumps birth date, so it is the 1806 Staindrop option. I was hoping it would be the 1808 option instead, as I would then have links to Weardale, a place I really like visiti...

Advice please - which Ann Shaw?
I have a mystery I'd like some advice on, please! I have an ancestor, Ann Shaw. She married Hugh Lindsley in Barnard Castle in 1844. In the 1851 and 1861 Census she is listed as being born in 1808, birthplace Staindrop. She died in 1864, both GRO and FreeREG list her as being aged 55, therefore born...

Re: Can anyone help identify an icon?
Thank you very much for this! Yes, he does look as if he might be a Boyar, now I've looked it up, probably Russian, from the pictures I've seen. Which actually brings me more questions than answers.... The icon was amongst a (very few) things that I got from my grandfather. He died when I was about ...

Can anyone help identify an icon?
... as in the photo below. About 10cm in diameter, wooden, with a hook on one end, provenance probably Ukrainian/Russian, maybe Jewish.
Has anyone any ideas about what it is, or what it might represent?
Thanks
Paul H

Re: Major Security Breach at Gedmatch
Today on Facebook: UPDATE: We expect the GEDmatch site to be back online by Saturday, July 25 at the latest. I had an e-mail yesterday explaining the problem and assuring me that my DNA is held in a separate place, and was not accessed. It also mentioned that some MyHeritage users had received scam ...

Re: Major Security Breach at Gedmatch
Their Facebook site was updated today, it says it'll be down for another 2-3 days.
Re: DNA
Thank you - I'll have another look at Gedmatch, in that case. Didn't know that many US companies were compliant with GDPR, it's been a problem for UK companies I've worked for in the past to find a non-US backup server. Living DNA was definitely kept in Europe when I signed up in 2017. I know they'v...
Re: DNA
I think I understand most of the caveats that come with DNA results. I have only done Living DNA so far (the first set of results tied in quite well with my paper trail, the second updated version they provided recently I suspect goes a lot further back in time, but that's by the by). The reasons I ...
