We welcome any query on Who When Where. If you have previously posted it on another forum (including the old WDYTYA forum), please state this in your opening post - this will save people redoing the research which has been done before: they can look at it and possibly go further with it.

Re: Eliza Wilson

I’m wondering about the entry in the Lunacy Patients Admission Registers for Eliza Wilson admitted to Grove Hall on 22 Oct 1867. Grove Hall was apparently a private asylum in Bow, which is within the Poplar RD. Eliza was discharged 27 Mar 1871, but marked as ‘No Improvement’. There is then an admiss...

Re: Eliza Wilson

I know you're searching for Eliza, but on trying the GRO death records, and being careful to tick 'exact match' against the name Eliza, Elizabeth Wilson comes up (aged 41, died SQ 1870 Vol 01C, page 405, Poplar Union). You may have already ruled her out, but I'm passing her entry on, just in case. ...

Re: The Death and Burial Question

I've long been a 'fan' of death certificates, as not only can they give you useful information such as addresses & informants, but the cause of death can be illuminating too. For instance, I learned that my 14-year-old GG Uncle died in an asylum. His asylum records were heart-breaking, but also ...

Re: Advice please - which Ann Shaw?

It looks like Ralph Burrell died in 1819 and Hannah may have then married Alexander Summerbell in 1821. A Hannah Summerbell aged 59 was buried Staindrop in 1836. From the 1841 & 1851 census Ann Shaw had most of her children before she & Hugh married 1841 Staindrop Ann Lindsley 69 Hugh Lindsl...

Re: Advice please - which Ann Shaw?

I thought ordering the 1844 marriage certificate would clear up which Ann Shaw was correct, but it doesn't list her father. Both resident at Staindrop, though. Mother Hannah does seem the most likely, and Staindrop is very distinct from Auckland. A Hannah Shaw married Ralph Burrell in 1811 at Stain...

Re: Albert Roberts

I don't think those were 'your' Albert. These are all AE Roberts, whereas your man served only as Albert. Also 'your' Albert was in the 1st Garrison Battalion, South Staffs, and not the 3rd Battalion. I believe he will have been in India with the 2/4 Devonshire, transferring to the South Staffs in (...

Re: Albert Roberts

Which presumably has led you to Alfred Roberts 204021, 1st Garrison Battalion, South Staffordshire Regiment, previously 201339 in the 2/4 Devonshire Regiment. However, that man didn't receive the 1914/15 star so will not have served abroad before 1916. Listed on the same medal roll is a Herbert Huxt...

Re: What happened to Simon Peter?

I would be perfectly happy to accept that its the same man if it was my tree. I don't know how 'Frank' describes Thomas's occupation on his first marriage, but on his second he says he's a warehouseman, which is close enough to porter per the census. The presence of Annie Agnes as Thomas & Marga...

Re: Moses Thomas , February 1854, Tonypandy area

If we are to assume he was taken in by the Richards family then its possible they didn't know the exact details of his birth etc. The prevalence of the same surnames makes it difficult to draw any conclusions, but there were two Moses Thomas's born in the Merthyr RD within a couple of years of each ...

Re: What happened to Simon Peter?

The same Frank Rogers appears to have married Catherine Pearce in 1867 in Bermondsey, and is in the 1871 census with her and daughter Annie (Annie Agnes Rodgers) in Newington, aged 25 and a tailor born Lincolnshire. I can't see the marriage online. ADDED: In 1881 Annie Agnes Rodgers is in Spalding, ...
