We welcome any query on Who When Where. If you have previously posted it on another forum (including the old WDYTYA forum), please state this in your opening post - this will save people redoing the research which has been done before: they can look at it and possibly go further with it.

Re: WDYTYA 2022 series
I have only heard of three of them!, I am sure someone will comment that they are all white. I always like a mixture of people with different backgrounds and hopefully the number of people will increase later.

TNA document ordering
TNA have just changed the last document ordering times on the late opening days (Tuesday and Thursdays) from 3.30 pm to 4 pm but did not put out an announcement, consequently I could have saved myself another visit!. It is only a small step, why can't they restore the 5 pm time slot for Tuesdays and...

Re: What happened Next?
Have you looked for Charles Wetton's Army record (I think it's on line at FMP), I don't have a subscription anymore. From around 1881 the names of wives and children should be included in his record.

Re: 1921 census review
In my view TNA nowadays are keeping records closed on the smallest of reasons, particularly on data protection and section 38 (Health and Safety) grounds (e.g James Hanratty and Derek Bentley) yet take no action on records which in my view should never have been opened. I take the point on the Durha...

Re: 1921 census review
The Information Commissioner's Office have (eventually) got back to me and they have confirmed that they had no contact with FMP or TNA about the transcriptions, it does surprise me given that FMP had the transcriptions on the closed records done in India, assuming the ICO were informed.

Re: 1921 census 50% discount
I also got a copy of the email, it's not actually mentioned on TNA's website though. But does it send a message that people aren't paying £3.50 for each image but going to the hubs and getting it free. I did ask FMP to cut their charges because of the awful transcriptions. If FMP can cut the cost fo...

Re: Military records
I am sorry but is not a choice between no index to WO 420 and one with initials only. TNA are not responsible for the poor listing but they should have ensured that MOD had an adequate list to be used for the public. MOD have experience of listing the First World War records which was done properly ...

Re: Military records
Re us blaming TNA for the less than helpful omission of given names from the catalogue. It did strike me as good going for TNA to index an release at all, even if it's just a small subset. Then I thought to look at a spreadsheet that the MoD had released in 2014 indexing soldiers born before 1901 i...

Re: Military records
TNA have released records in Series WO 420 for the REME organisation, alas they are closing them for 115 years! ... You may know what you mean but this could suggest that all such records are closed until 115y after the creation of the records. No - firstly, without proof of death, the current MoD ...

Re: Military records
It is ironicle that researchers have to quote full name of the individual/s to gain access to the files, whereas TNA do not put that information in the catalogue. The idea that the records should be digitised will only led to problems, we all know that will be errors. I just don't buy the medical in...
