We welcome any query on Who When Where. If you have previously posted it on another forum (including the old WDYTYA forum), please state this in your opening post - this will save people redoing the research which has been done before: they can look at it and possibly go further with it.

Re: WW2 military records

There is an article in the August 2021 edition of WDYTYA Magazine. Basically MOD are trying to transfer the records to TNA but it may take seven years!. The issue does need to be sorted out quickly.

Re: John Moah (1810 - 1892)

I think you going to need to look for any records for Australia, particularly for Western Australia and see if you can find the conditional pardon. I am sure the archives in Australia should be able to advise.

TNA update

Not much change in my view, it is still only operating at one-third of capacity.

Re: Trying to identify location - possibly in Cornwall

I agree it could be anywhere, I do wonder whether people would be allowed to stroll in an area where it was likely that the beach would have been covered with barbed wire but that may have changed after D-Day.

Re: Church Farm, Billingham, Stockton, Durham

Your best bet is to contact the Durham Archives office or to find a copy of a map of the village of Billingham which may be online. The Victoria County History for County Durham (if one has been published) may mention it. I can't see anything on line. Have you tried the National Archives Discovery c...

Re: TNA update 1 July 2021

TNA do not get many archives put online, it is a very small amount (don't believe what they say on their catalogue as they count what was one document into up to 200 items and count it as 200). Most of the documents are not copyable and for example they sell copies of their records for example to an...

Re: TNA update 1 July 2021

Now that the Prime Minister has announced that it is planned for COVID -19 restrictions to be lifted on 19 July (in particular on wearing masks and social distancing) what will TNA do with the main leg of them stopping researchers researching. Will they comply or will they continue to block research...

TNA update 1 July 2021

Researchers might like to see this. Why are TNA still denying researchers bringing in their own note books?. I have also wasted about 1 1/2 to 3 1/2 hours on each visit because they insisted on closing at 3.30 pm. Do TNA really want researchers to visit or are they trying to stop researchers, my vie...

WDYTYA Magazine Summer 2021

With reference to page 10 "The National Archives increase capacity" this is a drop in the ocean, there is just not enough time to look at the records with the 3.30 pm closing time and the number of bulk orders of eight per two-day booking is not enough. You still cannot order documents on site at Ke...

Illegitimate children

This is a good article, to which I would add that in Scotland there are the Kirk Sessions registers which although not indexed by name give details of alleged fathers. On a sadder note the criminal records at The National Archives or in newspapers contain details of alleged murders or of infanticide...
